What is a Retirement Calculator?

A retirement calculator tells you two things: the total corpus you need on the day you retire, and how much you should invest every month from today to build it. You answer a few simple questions about your age, your spending and how you save, and the calculator handles inflation and returns for you.

Most salaried Indians rely on EPF and assume it will be enough. With rising costs and longer lives, it often isn't. A retirement corpus calculator shows the real gap early, while there is still time to close it with small monthly investments.

How Much Money Do You Need to Retire in India?

It depends on how you want to live. The calculator lets you pick one of three retirement lifestyles:

  • Downgrade: A simpler life with 25% lower monthly spending than today, for example after your home loan is paid off and children are settled.
  • Same: Keep your current standard of living, adjusted for inflation.
  • Upgrade: 25% more than you spend today, for travel, hobbies or extra healthcare.

Inflation in India has averaged around 6% a year, so prices roughly double every 12 years. A family spending ₹50,000 a month today will need about ₹2.9 lakh a month in 30 years just to keep the same lifestyle.

How the Retirement Corpus is Calculated

  1. Future Expenses: Your monthly spending, adjusted for your chosen lifestyle, is grown at 6% inflation until your retirement age.
  2. Corpus Required: The corpus needs to pay those expenses every year, rising with inflation, until the age of 75, close to the average life expectancy in India. The unspent money keeps earning around 7% a year in safer, income-oriented investments.
  3. Your Savings: Your existing savings and the amount you already put aside every month (EPF, NPS, SIPs) are grown until retirement at the return of where you invest.
  4. Additional SIP: If your savings fall short, the gap is converted into the extra monthly SIP you need to start today.

Safe vs Market Linked Retirement Savings

Where you invest until retirement makes a big difference to how much you need to save each month:

  • Safe (around 8%): NPS, EPF, PPF, fixed deposits and other low-risk options. Steady, but only a little ahead of inflation.
  • Market Linked (around 12%): Equity and hybrid mutual funds, stocks and gold. Their prices move with the market, so returns go up and down in the short term, but they have historically been higher over long periods.

If you have 15 years or more until retirement, a market-linked approach can bring your monthly SIP down sharply. Many people use a mix of both, and move towards safer options as retirement gets closer.

How to Use the Retirement Calculator

  1. Enter your current age and the age you plan to retire.
  2. Enter your current monthly household expenses.
  3. Choose the lifestyle you want after retirement.
  4. Choose whether you save in safe or market-linked investments.
  5. Enter your existing retirement savings and how much you set aside every month, including your EPF contribution.

These figures are estimates for illustration only. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks and returns are not guaranteed. Review your retirement plan at least once a year.
